Participants recently had the opportunity to transform physical objects into digital models and 3D-printed creations through a new 3D scanning workshop hosted at The Ohio State University Health Sciences Library’s EdTech Incubator (ETI). This workshop was led by Thomas Ellsworth, learning and development consultant at the Health Sciences Library (HSL), and ETI coordinator Mo Duncan, alongside the Ohio State College of Dentistry Associate Professor – Clinical & Assistant Dean for Digital Dentistry and Advanced Technology Leonardo Nassani, DMD, and the Ohio State College of Nursing Innovation Studio Manager – Laboratory Research Operations Senior Analyst Joshua Gagliardi.
The Inspiration and Development of the Workshop
“This is an idea we’ve been developing over the past year with the goal of putting the ETI to fuller use,” said Nassani.
The Einstar Vega handheld 3D scanner device was purchased last year for this purpose, and Gagliardi also brought a scanner to demonstrate the technology.
Nassani has been a longtime user of the ETI’s offerings, leveraging the spaces and technology available. In fact, in September 2025, he co-hosted another workshop, teaching researchers, faculty, staff and learners how to use the 3D scanner.
The Workshop Experience
Ellsworth, Duncan, Nassani and Gagliardi presented key information to understand 3D modeling and its importance in the healthcare space. Small groups then focused on virtually modeling a physical object with a 3D scanner; objects ranged from a tooth-shaped planter pot to an elephant figurine. Workshop hosts collaborated with participants to add proper texture to each object and make any corrections in StarVision. Once the scans were finalized, participants were given the opportunity to print their scan in the 3D Printing Zone.
“It’s been a great example of collaboration across the colleges and HSL and a practical way to explore how the ETI can support hands-on workshops,” said Nassani.
The Future of 3D Scanning Workshops
Looking ahead after this successful workshop, this team is developing a cadence to allow more people to learn the importance and basics of 3D scanning applications in healthcare. Stay tuned for more information as it emerges!
