3D Scans Optimize Cancer Treatment at The James
At the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, proton therapy is revolutionizing cancer treatment.
Witold Matysiak, PhD, is collaborating with Health Sciences Library (HSL) Learning and Development Consultant Thomas Ellsworth to use technology to improve patient care at the James. They are using the Einstar Vega handheld 3D scanner from the EdTech Incubator (ETI) to digitally recreate a proton therapy gantry.
The scans are then sent back to the ETI to be cleaned and simplified. The team foresees a reduction — and possibly an elimination — of interruptions during patients’ treatment sessions.
The long-term goal of this project is the creation of a computer program that can predict errors before they occur. As the project progresses, stay tuned for an update from the ETI.
