Integrating 3D Technology into Dental Education: Dr. Nassani’s Innovative Approach

Dr. Leonardo Nassani, DMS, MBA, an assistant professor at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, has developed a dynamic curriculum for his Operative Dentistry 4 course that blends new technology with critical research skills by effectively integrating multiple Ed-Tech Incubator (ETI) zones. Dr.Nassani provides his students with a new learning experience that prepares them for the evolving digital dentistry field.

The Exploration

The medical field is constantly evolving, especially in terms of technology, which is advancing at a rapid pace. Dr. Nassani recognized the potential to emerge technologies, like 3D printing, into dental education. This innovation allows students to not only learn about dental concepts and see them visually, but also to explore them in a three-dimensional space. With the intoduction of 3D printing in dentistry, students can deepen their understanding of dental anatomy in ways that textbooks cannot offer. By interacting with 3D models, they gain hands-on experience that enhances their learning. Dental education is evolving alongside technological advancements, and professionals are already using digital tools in clinical procedures. Dr. Nassani’s approach—giving students the opportunity to work with innovative technology—provides them with valuable skills that will benefit their future careers. They are learning to take their 2D knowledge and bring it to life, bridging the gap between theory and practical execution.

The Solution

As a part of the Operative Dentistry 4 course, students at Ohio State design digital onlays in the dentistry lab and then learn how to convert their designs into 3D printer-compatible files. The students then transition to the ETI’s 3D printing zone where they bring their designs to life. Once the designs are printed, students return to the dentistry lab to perform integrity tests and reflect on their work. This integrated approach not only enhances technical skills but also prepares them for the future work they may encounter in their field.

The Experience

Through the integration of critical appraisal, hands-on learning, and new technologies, Dr. Nassani creates an innovative and comprehensive dental curriculum. By combining the expertise and knowledge of HSL librarians with the technologies of the ETI, Dr.Nassani is not only preparing his students for challenges they may face today but also developing life-long skills. These skills are important for adapting to the growing dentistry field.
